The 2022 Winner’s Creation

“Slow Down is a set of cutlery designed to make diners ‘come closer’ to their food and experience eating in a slower manner.  Inspired by primitive tools used for handling food, incorporating modern cutlery features.

Individuals hold and use cutlery in their own personal way.  This set of cutlery is designed to invite users to hold it differently.  The indentations on the surface of each pieces aim to direct the user to hold them in a specific way putting the diners out of their comfort zone while eating.  This helps slow down the process of eating.

Designed to be made in sterling silver, with a brushed texture on the handles and a polished finish on the bowl, tines and blade.”

The cutlery was made by Callum Partridge, a skilled metal worked and former student of Simone ten Hompel.

Runner Up

Crown

by Tong Wu

“The design of this tableware comes from the shape of spears, shields and crowns. Initially the conventional form of tableware was redefined and questioned and then combined with the aesthetics of spears, shields and crowns.  Their unique aesthetic concept and practicalities were refined and new design features created.

Functionally, this set of cutlery is not a traditional hand-held cutlery, but a finger-sleeve type.  The weight of each piece of cutlery is carefully controlled, and the sizing divided into sets of large, medium and small.”

Statement by the Judges

Ingenious, striking and fun with a subtle nod to the Jubilee. A playful design that demands to be taken seriously.

Silent Conversation

by Jelena Ivanova

“To get into this project, I started with more than 60 drawings to get a feel of what I wanted to explore, and to generate thoughts on cutlery. Absence of talk during the meal, just gestures of smoothly moving hands speaking noiselessly like a silent language, where instead of talking the taste of food is our perception. That is 'Silent Conversation' - between our gestures and our knowing.

My investigations included 2D drawings and mark making with wire and paper to explore the silent movements of our hands while eating, perceiving, appreciating and enjoying the taste of food interchange words or letters.  Lastly I created 3D models to help establish design and dimensions before making the final prototype fork for submission.”

Statement of the Judges
